Possibilities for Advent
We are now in the season of Advent. Our tradition reminds us this is a time of anticipation and waiting.

We at the School offer a few possiblities to help you make this an intentional time focused on the anticipation of the birth of our Lord, rather than a time of frantic activity, focused on shopping, decorating and partying. Let us know of links and resources you find helpful.

Advent 2008

  • The latest, and just released 2008-2009 Gospel Based Discipleship from our own Diocese of North Carolina, an provides excellent framework for daily devotional readings as well as a Prayer List, which includes not only those of our diocese, but people of both our companion dioceses, Costa Rica and Botswana.

  • To experience your own personal Advent Retreat, go to the Sacred Space website.  Find some excellent guidelines to customize your own experience.

  •  To begin, or to renew your Advent Wreath tradition in your home, find an excellent guide by Victor Hoagland, C/P., at this link

  • This Advent season, on-line calendars (found at Episcopal life on-line) can offer meditations and more.  Also find  several on-line advent calendars, as well as daily meditations from the Episcopal Cafe.
  • Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation have several good ideas about Advent, most notably The Advent Conspiracy, by Mike Kinman.
  • Here's a 10 minute video of Archbishop of Canterbury speaking a few days ago about Advent.

Our Presiding Bishop, The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori wishes for us all:  "..a blessed Advent season - may it be filled with peace, rest and awareness of light in the midst of darkness."

Short Courses in Adult Christian Education

Exploring a theology of food:  The theme of this DVD has to do with how food intersects with our faith lives. Food might seem like a strange (even boring?) topic for church study. We know that God calls us to worship, to pray, and to engage in acts of charity toward the poor. But does God really care if we eat pasta or beef for dinner?

Toward a missionary diocese: The theme of this DVD has to do with the saying that we have heard in the Diocese of North Carolina for some years: “A missionary diocese… living God’s dream by making disciples and making a difference.” As time passes such phrases sometimes merely become familiar words that have lost their power. And yet, there is deep meaning to this vision, and these DVDs are designed to help us reflect afresh about “living God’s dream.” What do these words mean to us? To our congregations? What do we need to do to make this vision a reality?
