Short Courses in Adult Christian Formation

With the support of a grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, the School of Ministry is busy producing DVDs for use in congregations, intended as a stimulus for adult group discussion. The DVDs cover a variety of biblical, theological and ecclesiological subjects. The brief programs, usually lasting from 12-15 minutes, draw upon the rich human resources of our diocese.

Every congregation in the diocese has received a notebook which contains DVDs along with some basic guidance to help in their use. Congregations will continue to receive new programs as they become available.

Now available and already circulated to congregations:

Conversations about a theology of partnership – a series of four programs suitable for mission groups and companion relationships, with one session related specifically to the Millennium Development Goals

Conversations about the Kingdom of God – a series of four programs examining our varied understandings of what the Bible means when it refers to the Kingdom of God and to the in-breaking of the Kingdom

Circulated to congregations in February and March:

Toward a missionary diocese – a series of four programs reflecting upon our diocesan vision of being “a missionary diocese – Living God’s dream, making disciples and making a difference”

A theology of food – reflections upon biblical teachings regarding our relationship to creation and to agriculture

In the works:

Studies on the Gospel of Mark; Conversations about ethics and the Gospel of Matthew; Conversations about the Sermon on the Mount; and an extended documentary on the Episcopal Church in North Carolina, from colonial times onward

Short Courses in Adult Christian Education

Exploring a theology of food:  The theme of this DVD has to do with how food intersects with our faith lives. Food might seem like a strange (even boring?) topic for church study. We know that God calls us to worship, to pray, and to engage in acts of charity toward the poor. But does God really care if we eat pasta or beef for dinner?

Toward a missionary diocese: The theme of this DVD has to do with the saying that we have heard in the Diocese of North Carolina for some years: “A missionary diocese… living God’s dream by making disciples and making a difference.” As time passes such phrases sometimes merely become familiar words that have lost their power. And yet, there is deep meaning to this vision, and these DVDs are designed to help us reflect afresh about “living God’s dream.” What do these words mean to us? To our congregations? What do we need to do to make this vision a reality?
